This family has always had fun family gatherings. Whether it is a birthday, a holiday, a summer barbecue, a death in the family, a wedding, an Easter egg hunt, or just for no reason at all, these times are very special. There is always a time for the telling and retelling of old family stories. Mike always seemed to really enjoy these times, and his laugh was contagious as the tales continued. He would add a few details from his own memory.

One of my favorite memories of such a gathering was at the time of Mike and Laurel’s 25th anniversary. Their children came to us weeks ahead and asked if they could have this surprise party in our yard. They pulled it off perfectly. While designated persons kept Mike and Laurel away from Humboldt, the children and their cousins and several others literally transformed our yard into a festive party place. They worked for hours and carried out all their plans for decorations, a delicious meal, and even a program. Mike and Laurel suspected nothing, and were overwhelmingly surprised.
